Real letters from a real mom.

Close-up of dried purple and white flowers, a black pen, and handwritten notes on paper.

Our story

This mom who writes every letter is a real mom. She has 5 children who are mostly grown. Those adult-ish children have friends, roommates, coworkers, and acquaintances who don’t have an amazing relationship with their mothers, and so this mom felt that maybe they would like a nice letter to hear what she says in letters she sent to her own children. And this mom, she still needs her own mother, whom she calls several times a week, and occasionally sends (or gets!) a letter.

A mother and child holding hands and looking at a sunset over a body of water.
A diverse group of people, including children and adults, walking hand-in-hand on a paved path through a park with trees showing fall foliage.

The truth and not the truth

To respect the privacy of her friends and family, the names of the people in the letters are not those of real people. Some of the letter people are a mashup of real people. Others are completely fictional. The ideas and the advice are real though! For example, Nana in the letters is a mashup of her real mother, a couple of aunts, and her grandmother. The stories are mostly true, but the details may change to protect the (mostly) innocent.

“I think a lot of queer folks out there don’t have relationships with their moms either. Or people whose moms have passed. I think it is a really sweet idea.”
